Olive oil expiration date

When we pick up a bottle of olive oil at a grocery store, or anything in fact, we will almost always check for the “expiry date” printed on the product. We don’t use “expiry” date in olive oil to signify the “use by” date. Instead, the term “best before” date is used.  The two mean very different things. In European countries, producers are required to provide a “best used by” date (also known as a pull date) on every container of olive oil. The industry standard for this dating is 24 months, which leads one to conclude that oil will remain fresh for 2 years, but in most cases this is not true. Heat, light, air and time are the four main factors that lead to olive oil expiration and contribute to its rancidity. Like any other food product, olive oil also expires. But olive oil expiration date is just a rough estimate of how long the oil should remain at its best quality and it is most applicable to its conventional use of cooking.
